According to Flight Fleet Forecast 2016-2035 estimates, the size of the global commercial fleet could reach nearly <strong>50,000 aircraft by 2035<\/strong>. The digital revolution not only brings opportunities for the productivity of the industry, but also for the safety of air transport. The need for user and crew safety has always been a major issue. It is in response to this, among others, that the aeronautics industry is opening up more and more to <strong>new technologies, and more particularly to the field of the Internet of Things (IoT)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In this article, we propose to focus on the <strong>optimization and security<\/strong> of aircraft maintenance, on the<strong>optimization of non-motorized equipment fleets<\/strong>, but also on <strong>baggage tracking<\/strong> thanks to geolocation technologies.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elainnovation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/localisation-outils-aeronautique-1_web.jpg\" alt=\"aircraft maintenance\" class=\"wp-image-604\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"txt_title wp-block-heading\"><strong>Optimize and secure parts maintenance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>When talking about the factory of the future and Industry 4.0, the subject of <strong>predictive maintenance<\/strong>comes up regularly. Indeed, in order to optimize the production line and the maintenance of the devices, the manufacturers seek <strong>to collect a maximum of data<\/strong> allowing them to predict the obsolescence of certain parts. By locating the latter, operators will be able to track numerous indicators such as their<strong>utilization rate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>L\u2019optimisation de la production et de la maintenance passent \u00e9galement par la\u00a0<strong>g\u00e9olocalisation des outils<\/strong>\u00a0dans le but de r\u00e9duire le temps perdu \u00e0 rechercher des \u00e9quipements, d\u2019automatiser les inventaires, de r\u00e9duire les co\u00fbts d\u2019outillage, mais surtout de s\u00e9curiser ces op\u00e9rations. Pour ce type d\u2019application, une\u00a0<strong>localisation tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cise<\/strong>\u00a0est souvent n\u00e9cessaire de par la taille des entrep\u00f4ts et le nombre d\u2019\u00e9quipements \u00e0 localiser. Pour pouvoir faire un inventaire en temps r\u00e9el de tout un parc d\u2019outillages, certaines technologies de localisation indoor sont plus adapt\u00e9es que d\u2019autres. Par exemple, la d\u00e9tection par\u00a0<strong>Angle d\u2019Arriv\u00e9e (AOA)<\/strong>, va permettre d\u2019avoir une pr\u00e9cision pouvant atteindre 10cm tout en prenant en compte la hauteur \u00e0 laquelle se situe un objet dans un r\u00e9f\u00e9rentiel 3D. Ce type de technologie haute pr\u00e9cision va permettre de localiser en temps r\u00e9el un outil, qu\u2019il se trouve sur une \u00e9tag\u00e8re, au sol ou sur un chantier de maintenance.<\/p>\n\n<p>Bien qu\u2019il existe aujourd\u2019hui de nombreuses balises de localisation sur le march\u00e9, peu r\u00e9pondent r\u00e9ellement aux besoins du secteur de l\u2019a\u00e9ronautique. As the time between the arrival and departure of an aircraft becomes shorter and shorter, and <strong>safety standards become more and more complex<\/strong>, airlines are seeking to optimize their equipment fleets while enhancing runway safety. For example, at Paris Airport, there are +\/- 2,000 flights per day and nearly <strong>10,000 non-motorized equipment<\/strong> to be identified and located that can be used by several different operators. As airport sites extend over several hectares, equipment is often misplaced, leading to additional costs related to the purchase of this equipment, the price of which can amount to several tens of thousands of euros.<\/p>\n\n<p>To respond to these issues, IoT&#8217;s manufacturers offer <strong>indoor and outdoor tracking<\/strong> solutions to optimize the management of equipment fleets over long distances. This is made possible thanks to the use of location beacons embedding long-range communication protocols such as Bluetooth Low Energy, LoRaWan protocol, Ultra Wide Band or Sigfox. These wireless beacons, fixed on non-motorized equipment, will be detected by the GPS boxes embedded in motorized vehicles passing by. This includes the tracking and identification of luggage throughout the passenger&#8217;s journey. In particular, in order to avoid loss and abandonment, knowing that every year more than <strong>25 million pieces of luggage are reported lost<\/strong>. Manufacturers are therefore looking for ever more efficient and innovative indoor tracking solutions. For example, Airfrance has implemented an <strong>automatic RFID-based inventory<\/strong>solution to reduce baggage handling and transfer times.<\/p>\n\n<p>The implementation of such a solution is also an opportunity to optimize passengers&#8217; travel experience. By equipping luggage with RFID tags, travelers can know at a glance on their smartphone, the location of their luggage thanks to antennas placed at strategic crossing points throughout the airport. When the tags enter the field of detection of the antennas, the antennas capture their identifiers to locate the luggage. This enables airlines to <strong>reduce their costs<\/strong> related to lost or stolen baggage and <strong>increase passengers&#8217; sense of security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"txt_title wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>In the age of digitalization, the airport sector cannot ignore the new technological solutions provided by the IoT. Thanks to the connected tags, it is now possible to <strong>geolocate people and equipment indoors<\/strong>, something that was still impossible a few years ago. Today, technological advances have made it possible to ensure exceptional precision that can go below one meter, as well as a reactivity on the order of one second, enabling real-time data feedback.
